From āinaccurate resultsā to holistic data and meaningful goals
š Hi, Iām Chris Wenger (aka, āSpeech Dudeā)
Ā
Iām a neurodivergent SLP w/ over 20 years working with ND kids.
I used to spend hours assessing a student only to end up with standardized scores that didnāt truly reflect their skills and abilities.
āAhhhh⦠the inaccuracy!ā I would silently groan in self-loathing while I gave ND students subtests that I'd probably fail myself... secretly hoping a student would āceiling outā... all while knowing my results wouldn't reveal anything worthwhile.
Stress. Anxiety. *Ugh⦠š
š Raise an imaginary hand if your with me.

When it comes to our autistic kids, standardized assessments fail because:

1 - They arenāt normed on autistic kidsāwhich leaves us with deficits-based results that lack the critical information we need to create strengths-based goals and comprehensive reports. Andā¦
2 - They donāt reveal information about critical support areas like self-advocacy, friendships, sensory needs, accommodations, self-regulation, perspective taking, and more.
š We know these are key factors for our ND students! And we absolutely NEED this data if we want to write goals that have a lasting impact on their happiness and their ability to navigate socially for the rest of their lives!
But⦠there hasnāt been an assessment to target these key areas. Until now...

The 'missing piece' for thousands ofĀ therapists
The 'missing piece' for each evaluation
The DASEL has given me a way to merge neurodiversity affirming practice with functional gains. I love the way information is gathered in a way that respects neurological differences while connecting to underlying needs and strengths. This allows me to develop functional goals that we can work on using a strength based approach. It has been the āmissing pieceā for each evaluation.

My goals are more informed...and my kids love the assessment
The DASEL has been extremely valuable for initial evals, annual IEP meetings, and triennial reviews for students within a variety of eligibility categories. It's really easy to collect information to support self-advocacy goals, perspective taking skills, and much more. My goals are much more informed, and the kids actually love the assessment.

Comfortable and confident assessing autistic clients
I love the DASEL because it puts our neurodiverse clients at the forefront. We are directly asking clients about their strengths and struggles, and their thoughts on their friendships. It is also a new view on how we observe our clients and ask the adults in our client's lives for input in a neurodiversity affirming way. The use of this assessment has made me feel comfortable and confident again in assessing autistic clients in a neurodiversity affirming way.

Allows me to get to know my students better than any other assessment
I love the DASEL because it allows me to get to know my students better than any other assessment. It is not standardized but the structure of it allows you to learn so much about the strengths and preferences of students. I also love how there are forms for parents and other educators working with students.

I like having insight into my student's own thoughts and feelings
I actually use this for MANY of the kids on my caseload. I like having the insight into my student's own thoughts and feelings for what they want in a friend, and what types of support s they need. It's extremely helpful to see how kids use their abilities in realistic situations, and this assessment helps me give them support based on that data.

The 'Old' Way
Standardized Assessments
ā Deficits-based: Emphasizes what the student cannot do, potentially leading to a negative or incomplete view of their abilities.
ā Non-affirming: seeks to suppress autistic characteristics, promotes autistic masking
ā Rigid structure: Relies on fixed protocols that may not accommodate diverse communication methods or sensory needs.
ā Limited data: Focuses primarily on standardized scores, offering a narrow snapshot of abilities. Academic performance only gives us part of the picture.
ā Stressful environment: Conducted in a high-pressure environment that stresses students and skews results.
ā āOne-size-fits-allā approach: Treats all students the same, missing nuances in how they communicate or learn.
ā Minimal collaboration: Often excludes input from families and educators who know the student best.
The āND Affirmingā Way
The DASEL
ā Strengths-based: Highlights the student's abilities and unique communication style, fostering a positive and affirming perspective.
ā Neuro affirming: respects studentās unique ND characteristics and promotes positive self-identity.
ā Flexible approach: Adapts to the studentās needs and unique characteristics, allowing for meaningful interactions that reflect their true potential.
ā Holistic insights: Combines standardized measures with input from key people in the studentās life and real-world observations.
ā Supportive environment: Prioritizes comfort, connection and FUN! Creating a safe space for authentic communication.
ā Individualized approach: Recognizes and respects each studentās unique way of engaging with the world.
ā Collaborative approach: Integrates perspectives from family members, teachers, and the student for a well-rounded assessment.

I always receive positive feedback at meetings when using this assessment.
Parents have heard how their kids have struggled for years. This strength based approach assessment regains parent's optimism and gathers the priorities and needs of the family and student. I can customize the assessment to add more information that is specific to my student, school or organization. The DASEL report and goal examples are so helpful when writing evaluations and IEP's. I always receive positive feedback at meetings when using this assessment. I HIGHLY recommend the DASEL!

Gave me confidence walking into meetings or talking to parents
I love that it gives you a full picture of the student. It asks all the right questions from not only their teachers but also their parents and most importantly themselves for how you as the SLP can make the most impact. I was new to working with the junior high and high school population and honestly feeling imposter syndrome. Having the DASEL gave me confidence walking into meetings or talking to parents
